Hiro Kamigaki grew up in rural Japan. As a kid, he daydreamed about visiting faraway places. Eventually, he started drawing them. “I try my best to draw interesting scenes that no one has ever seen,” he told TIME for Kids. “My intention is to surprise everyone.”
In Kamigaki’s new book, Pierre the Maze Detective: The Curious Case of the Castle in the Sky, readers adventure through imaginary landscapes. Along the way, they navigate mazes and solve puzzles.
Kamigaki hopes the book inspires kids to appreciate people, places, and lifestyles that are unfamiliar to them. “If we accept one another and interact with one another, the world will become more fun,” he says. “The world is more interesting because of all the different people who live in it together.”
Kamigaki shared a maze from The Curious Case of the Castle in the Sky with TFK readers. In the scene below, the white arrow marks the beginning of the maze. From there, find a path that leads to the white flag at the end of the maze. In the book, readers are challenged to complete additional puzzles and search for hidden items along the way.
