Two Roads, by JOSEPH BRUCHAC (pictured), tells the story of 12-year-old Cal and his dad, Pop. It’s set in 1932, during the Great Depression, when many people struggled with poverty. Pop, an Army veteran, joins a march on Washington, D.C., to demand early payment of a government bonus for veterans of World War I. Before he goes, he tells Cal about their family history: They are Creek Indians. He then sends Cal to a Native American boarding school. Conditions are poor. But it is there that Cal learns more about his heritage.
Bruchac’s father lived during the Great Depression. “I wrote the story in part because I wanted to know more about that time in American history,” Bruchac told TFK Kid Reporter Belle Irby. “By writing about it, I was also learning about it.”
