Trump Visits Asia
President Donald Trump began a 12-day trip to Asia on November 3. He will visit five nations. One goal is to strengthen ties with Asia. Another is to promote trade. Trump stopped first in Japan. He gave a speech to American service members at Yokota Air Base. The president later met with Shinzo Abe. He is Japan’s prime minister.
Trump traveled next to South Korea. “I think we are making a lot of progress,” he said. He was speaking about North Korea at a news conference on November 7. He said he hoped the country would “make a deal” to give up its nuclear weapons.
At press time, Trump was in China. China is North Korea’s biggest trade partner. Trump wants Chinese president Xi Jinping to cut off his country’s support of North Korea. He plans to visit Vietnam next.
Trump is slated to end his trip in the Philippines. There, the president will attend the East Asia Summit.
White House officials say Trump may squeeze in a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin before the summit. “We want Putin’s help on North Korea,” Trump said.
Trump’s visit to Asia is his longest foreign trip since taking office, in January. It is also the longest visit to Asia by a U.S. president since 1991.
