A Magical Swap
In the Disney Channel movie musical Freaky Friday, actress Cozi Zuehlsdorff plays a messy teenager named Ellie Blake. Ellie couldn’t be more different from her super-organized mother, Katherine. They can’t see eye-to-eye and often bicker. “At the start of the movie, Ellie doesn’t really feel grateful for her mom,” Zuehlsdorff told TIME for Kids.
But dramatic changes are in store for mother and daughter. When they accidentally break a magical hourglass that belonged to Ellie’s late father, they switch bodies. Now Ellie must juggle all the responsibilities her mother handled, and Katherine must once again see life through the lens of a teenager. The experience allows Ellie to grow up. “She learns to thank her mom more,” Zuehlsdorff says.
Since its publication, in 1972, Mary Rodgers’s novel Freaky Friday has been adapted for the screen several times, as well as for the stage. The Disney Channel film is based on a recent stage musical. Zuehlsdorff says, “The audience can expect lots of singing and dancing from the characters.”
Freaky Friday premieres on Disney Channel on August 10. Catch it at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
