MICHELLE ENEMARK

Have you heard of the Hanging Temple of Hengshan, in China? What about the Chocolate Hills, in the Philippines? These places and dozens of others are featured in The Atlas Obscura Explorer’s Guide for the World’s Most Adventurous Kid, by DYLAN THURAS and Rosemary Mosco. The book takes readers on an expedition to 100 of the world’s most thrilling spots, in 47 countries.

“Books are an entryway to the world,” Thuras told TIME for Kids. He hopes the book encourages young people to explore. “The most amazing things aren’t seen through a screen,” Thuras says. Most of the time, he adds, they can be found right in your backyard. “It’s not about going around the world; it’s about being curious and finding that there are incredible places in your own neighborhood.”
